Within a McDonalds restaurant, there are many job opportunities, McDonalds hires people from 14 onwards who take on a range of duties such as cleaning, cooking, drive through, front counter, working in McCafé or putting burgers together, these jobs are covered by the crew. The next step upwards is a crew trainer, then crew chief, shift manager, part time manager, then assistant manager, then finally restaurant manager. McDonalds offers crew scholarships, the fund consists of 20 different scholarships. McDonald’s crew also have the opportunity to do Certificate II in Retail Operations or Certificate lll in Retail Supervision.
McDonald’s crew are paid for all of the hours the work, including store open and closed hours, crew meetings, and training and orientation meetings. Employees are paid according to their age, however many employees shifts have been found to get fewer once they turn 16 because it is cheaper to pay the younger people so that’s who the majority of shifts are given to. McDonalds have flexible shifts in order to coordinate with school and other activities such as sports and friends. McDonalds discourages managers to befriend those who report to them for fear of favouritism claims. All McDonalds workers are given a 30 minute “rest pause” before and after their shifts and are entitled to a half price meal. McDonalds has a 30% crew discount, which is increased to 50% for the required time when a staff member receives “Employee of the Month”. McDonalds Australia also has a strict no harassment policy, which includes any type of discrimination, sexual, physical or verbal assault.
